A Whitney Houston biopic is currently in the works with a script from Oscar-nominated screenwriter Anthony McCarten. According to Deadline, the biopic, titled I Wanna Dance With Somebody, will be a joint production between the Whitney Houston Estate, Primary Wave, and Grammy-winning music producer Clive Davis.
Although the film doesn’t have a director as of yet, it is reported that Stella Meghie, who directed the romantic drama The Photograph, the 2017 drama Everything, Everything, and comedy The Weekend, is currently in negotiations to helm the project. There is currently no word on who will play the most awarded female music artist of all time.
Screenwriter Anthony McCarten has been on a roll at the Oscars over the last few years after penning the biographical films The Theory Of Everything, Darkest Hour, Bohemian Rhapsody, and The Two Popes. Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury), Gary Oldman (Winston Churchill), and Eddie Redmayne (Stephen Hawkins) all won lead actor Oscars, while Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins were nominated for their roles as Pope Francis and Pope Benedict respectively.
The producers describe their vision of the film as a “joyous, emotional and heart-breaking celebration of the life and music of the greatest female R&B pop vocalist of all time, tracking her journey from obscurity to musical superstardom. While being very frank about the price that super-stardom exacted, it will be both the rich and complex saga of the search for the perfect marriage between song and singer and audience, and at the same time the moving tale of a simple Jersey girl trying to find her way back home.”
