Whoopi Goldberg has given the waiting congregation hope that the previously announced Sister Act 3 will eventually find its way to Disney+.
Announced alongside the likes of Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, which was released in May 2022, the live-action Pinocchio, which came to life (kind of) in September, and Hocus Pocus 2, which flies onto Disney+ this month, Sister Act 3 appeared to be stuck in purgatory.
However, hope springs eternal, because Whoopi Goldberg was speaking to her Sister Act co-star Jenifer Lewis (Black-ish) on long-running talk-show The View and gave fans of the singing nuns a boost by saying that despite news on the sequel going quieter than a Sunday morning mass they were “still going to do that movie”. Speaking with Lewis, who starred in both 1992’s Sister Act and 93’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Goldberg said she’d “do everything I can to work with her because she’s fun.”
In 2021 it was reported that Ferdinand writer Tim Federle was set to orchestrate the choir (direct) for Sister Act 3, with The Nevers Madhuri Shekar writing the script, but there hasn’t been any updates since then.
The Golden-Globe nominated Sister Act starred Whoopi Goldberg as a nightclub singer who is forced to take refuge from the mob in a convent, where she ends up turning the choir into a soulful chorus complete with a Motown repertoire. It also starred Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey), Kathy Najimy (Hocus Pocus), and Harvey Keitel (Pulp Fiction), and went on to gross $231M worldwide. A sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit was released the following year.
