Other than the tease of Bullseye adopting a persona more in line with his comic book counterpart, the show comes to an end by the conclusion of season three. Matt, Foggy and Karen go back into business as lawyers to take on the world, Fisk and Daredevil come to a truce, their stories are over. Sure, good writing may take these characters into new places, but why bother? The show has been as much about Fisk as it is Daredevil, so with Fisk seemingly out of the picture, it’s time to close the story. Like The Punisher in season two of Daredevil, Bullseye could end up getting his own show rather than coming up against Daredevil again in season 4 or any future seasons.
I like many other people feel that season 1 and season 3 were brilliant, but season 2 was a bit of a let-down. I felt the story with The Hand was boring and didn’t intrigue me at all. The arc with The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal stood out, but that meant only half of the season was good. The Punisher was received so well in season 2 that he got his own Netflix show which was also brilliant (season 2 of The Punisher will be with us next year). I’d rather end on season 3 than have a sub-par season 4. And let me make it clear, season 3 was excellent throughout and has set the bar so high, it will be so difficult to top it.
Many shows end on a high rather than getting cancelled. I feel that Breaking Bad ended on a high and worked towards a strong conclusion for the character of Walter White. I’m sure that they could have kept the show going for another five seasons, but they clearly had an interest in telling a specific story that led to a conclusion for the protagonist.
Overall, I would welcome a fourth season of Daredevil and many more seasons, but only if the show matches the high standard of season 3. It is always better to end a show on a high and conclude it is a satisfactory way. If this is the end of Netflix’s Daredevil it would certainly be a shame, however I am satisfied with how season 3 concluded, both with Matt Murdock’s and Wilson Fisk’s arcs, so if this is the end, so be it.
