While it may sound like a late April Fool’s joke, it seems that the news of Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig starring together in a Lifetime film is really happening, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
A “wink” at the genre of the famous US channel, the comedy duo will team for A Deadly Adoption which is a top secret project about a “successful couple who house and care for a pregnant woman (played by 90210 Jessica Lowndes) with the hopes of adopting her unborn child — then things quickly go awry.”
More spoof than genuine thriller, Adoption will be a loving homage to Lifetime, who celebrate their 25th anniversary this year. Filming has already began, with Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions executive producing and Rachel Lee Goldenberg (Love at the Christmas Table) directing the film from a script by Andrew Steele, who wrote The Spoils of Babylon, which also featured Wiig and Ferrell.
UPDATE: According to EW, Ferrell and Wiig have decided to scrap the project, due to the fact that details have leaked online, with Ferrell stating that: “We are deeply disappointed that our planned top secret project was made public. Kristen and I have decided it is in the best interest for everyone to forego the project entirely, and we thank Lifetime and all the people who were ready to help us make this film.”
