Fans are waiting to see what can happen in an I Am Legend sequel, and Will Smith is here to tease what awaits.
In an appearance on the Drink Champs podcast, the actor dove into the early plans and where they are heading. “What we were gonna do is the prequel,” reveals the actor, but now they are going with the 2007 film’s alternate ending, where Smith’s character, Robert Neville, lives, and we’ll see a continuation of his story.
As for the franchise newcomers, Michael B. Jordan, Smith clears up rumors he’ll play his offspring. “Michael B. Jordan’s character currently is the head of a new settlement … in Connecticut,” Smith said. “He’s not my son.”
Smith also addressed the film’s infamous ending, which was subject to late-in-the-game reshoots with an alternate ending circling for years.
“Six weeks before the movie comes out, we had to reshoot the ending that was actually in the movie where my character dies,” Smith explained. “We saved it ’cause the audiences hated it. But it was what we originally wanted to do. It was probably an $8 million ending that got scrapped, ’cause there was special effects and all that stuff in it.”
I Am Legend went on to gross $585 million worldwide. Akiva Goldsman is penning the sequel, and Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) was reportedly in talks to direct. Stay tuned to Flickering Myth for more news.
