Since the film was first released back in 1988, we have heard countless rumours about a proposed sequel to Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, and now we may be closer than ever before to the return of the bio-exorcist.
Winona Ryder was asked about the status on the sequel on last night’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, and confirmed that the sequel is on the horizon. The actress, who played Lydia Deetz in the original, said:
“I think I can confirm it because Tim Burton did this interview… It was very hush-hush, top secret, ‘I don’t know what may happen, I don’t know,’ and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah, we’re doing it and Winona’s gonna be in it.’ So can I say…? I mean if he said it. But I really don’t know much more than anybody else.”
Last year, both director Tim Burton and star Michael Keaton had confirmed that a sequel is very close, and that a script was being written, but whether or not we ever see the long-gestating follow-up remains to be seen.
