Wonder Woman lassos $223 million worldwide box office opening

June 4, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Coming off the back of stellar reviews, Warner Bros.’ latest DC blockbuster Wonder Woman has exceeded expectations at the box office, pulling in a global opening weekend of $223 million. The film had originally been pegged to open in the region of $175 million, according to tracking estimates.

Domestically, Wonder Woman earned $100.5 million, giving director Patty Jenkins the distinction of becoming the first female filmmaker to have a film open above $100 million. Internationally, it added a further $122.5 million from 55 markets, led by China where it grossed $38 million. Other markets included South Korea ($8.5 million), Mexico ($8.4 million), Brazil ($8.3 million) and the UK ($7.5 million).

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman sees Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Force Majeure), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead) and Ann Wolf.
