Director Simon Kinberg has revealed that X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be more grounded than past movies in the franchise.
X-Men movies aren’t exactly known for their restraint, with 2017’s Logan being a notable exception. This is about to change, however, as the next movie in the main series, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, is going to be more grounded than what fans are used to.
This is according to longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg who spoke recently to ET at the premiere of Deadpool 2. Kinberg assures fans that the film’s tone will be “a little less operatic” than past X-Men movies. Adding that the movie is “more intense, and it’s more real and grounded, and hopefully more relatable.
“It’s much more loyal to the original comic than X-Men 3, which told the Dark Phoenix story,” Kinberg continued. “It’s a movie that involves extraterrestrial characters, which is not something that we’ve done in the X-Men franchise before, and is something that is a huge part of the Dark Phoenix saga in the comics.”
Fans will surely be pleased to hear these comments from Kinberg, who have been hoping for an adaptation of the famous storyline that is far more accurate to the comics than the last movie adaptation.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set for release on February 14th 2019 and sees Simon Kinberg directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) alongside new additions Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Lamar Johnson (Kings).
