While doing the rounds for his co-scripting duties on Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One (read our review here), Zak Penn has given an update on his foray into another cinematic virtual world, his rumoured Matrix movie.
Originally reported as a reboot, Penn dismissed this last year, at around about the same time stories began to emerge that it might be a Morpheus prequel, with Warner Bros. looking at Michael B. Jordan for the lead.
When asked about the status of the film by ScreenRant, Penn seemed to cast doubt on any of these rumours by revealing that the idea is very much in the embryonic stages of development. He said:
“I’ve been working on Matrix right now. Which is in…a phase right now. That’s a franchise I desperately want to see brought back and, I can’t go in to too much detail, but I’ve been harassing Warner Bros. for years to try to get it going again so that’s one thing I’m working on and I’ve been working on a bunch of other things too.”
He was also quick to reassure fans that he didn’t want to tarnish the legacy of The Matrix trilogy by stating:
“[W]hen it came out about Matrix, people were like ‘Oh no, there going to reboot Matrix’ I was like, Why, I’m not insane. I mean, The Matrix is still one of my favorite…they’d re-release The Matrix and people would go see it.”
What kind of Matrix movie would you like to see? A prequel? The further adventures of Neo? Or the likely option of a new set of characters within the same universe? After the mixed response to the sequels, let us know whether you’d follow the white rabbit into the cinema once again.
