Fresh from her Emmy Award win for Euphoria, actress and singer Zendaya has signed on to portray Ronnie Spector in a biopic of The Ronettes singer, Deadline has revealed.
The film will tell the life story of Spector and is based upon her memoir Be My Baby, with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury is in talks to write the script. Spector is serving as an executive producer on the project, and reportedly hand-picked Zendaya as the actress she wished to portray her in the film.
Zendaya is on a hot streak at the moment; along with her role in Euphoria (which saw her becoming the youngest person to win Lead Actress in a Drama Series), she recently reunited with Euphoria executive producer Sam Levinson for the lockdown shot Malcolm & Marie, with the low-budget film selling to Netflix for $30 million at the Toronto International Film Festival last month.
She is currently gearing up for production on Marvel and Sony’s as-yet-untitled Spider-Man 3 alongside Tom Holland and the newly-cast Jamie Foxx, and will next be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which is currently slated for release in December.
