When Zombieland initially landed back in 2009, it almost felt like a guarantee that there would be a sequel on the way. And while the follow up has been in play for what feels like forever, nothing has yet come to pass.
Well now, the screenwriters for the original film, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are also the writers behind long awaited sequel, have confirmed that the script is now complete.
Confirming that the movie is in active development, and that the cast have indeed seen the screenplay, the two said the following in a recent interview with ComicBook.com:
“It is [in active development]. We’re trying to get it going. All of our cast have read the script and love it. Ruben Fleischer is signed on. It’s just a matter of making our cast deals and making it for a budget number. All the cast have become superstars now so, we made Zombieland with 20 million, so it’s trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to paid”.
With Reese and Wernick also being the two scribes behind the smash hit Deadpool, one imagines that they have a little more sway nowadays, and have certainly been banging the Zombieland drum to the powers at be, as they describe here:
“We see [Sony Pictures chairman] Tom Rothman pretty frequently now and we’re pestering that dude. He’s like, ‘Please, enough with the Zombieland talk!’ We’re pestering him the way we pestered Fox on Deadpool. We’re not letting it go. We really want to see Zombieland 2”.
So I guess fans of the original movie should just sit tight. The movie is on the way, let’s just hope its sooner rather than later. Audiences have waited long enough.
