Soon after the sleeper hit Zombieland made its theatrical debut in 2009 and was met with positive reception from fans and critics alike, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and director Ruben Fleischer began discussing the idea of doing a sequel. Ever since, despite numerous reports over the years that the creative team behind the movie were in the process of working on a follow-up, the closest thing to Zombieland 2 that audiences have gotten is a pilot for a failed Zombieland Amazon Studios series.
However, all hope is not lost yet, as Reese and Wernick, who also wrote the script for this year’s superhero smash Deadpool, were guests on Greg Grunberg and Kevin Smith’s Geeking Out, a new AMC series, and gave a surprising update on the status of the sequel (via Comic Book).
The duo said, “That is breaking news that we’re on Zombieland 2 right now. We’re sitting with Woody [Harrelson] tomorrow and are going to sort of walk him through some of the stuff we want to do. All the cast is pretty excited.”
Again, there have been plenty of Zombieland 2 updates over the years that have led to nothing (check out two recent ones here and here), but regardless, it’s exciting to see that the sequel is still an important project to those involved with the first one.
On top of Harrelson, the main cast of the original film included Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, and, in order for a sequel to truly work, all of them would probably need to reprise their roles.
Wernick and Reese would likely serve as executive producers on the second entry in the franchise.
